Site 15 - the hustle is not over until it is

When Ghanaian music group R2bees dropped the remix version of ‘ I Dey Mad’, they took the country by storm. The group consists of Omar Sterling, the CEO and leader, whilst Mugeez is the lead voice. R2BEES released their first single titled ‘Yawa Gal’, which was an instant hit and when they teamed up with Nigeria’s Wande Coal for ‘Kiss Your Hand’, they became the real deal, and set course on glory road. For some years, they were the masters of the game with tracks like Odo, Bayla, Ajeii and the monster hit, Life (Walaahi), one of the dopiest rousing and influential joints we have come across in Africa.

R2Bees often sing and rap in English, native lingo Akan and Pidgin; they are one of the top purveyors of Ghanaian hip-hop subgenre hip-life, which mixes rap with sounds of high life and reggae. However, when the duo signed up with Nigerian singer, Wiz Kid’s record label in 2016, it was reported they had lost their shine or perhaps they had lost control of the wheel. Although they released a couple of singles, which include ‘Tonight’ ft Wiz Kid, and ‘Plantain Chips’ amongst others, it looked as if their castles stood upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand. And many wondered:  was it game over for the moneymakers? Well, the lot that thought r2bees would sweep the streets they once ruled had to eat up their words when the duo dropped their third studio album, Site 15.

The 15-track musical project pays homage to the community of Tema, Site 15, probably place that holds intriguing tales about their hustle to stardom. The album is a distinctive blend of hip-hop, afro beats, hip-life and high-life; features include Kwesi Arthur, Medikal, Darko Vibes, King Promise, and Wizkid.  From, ‘Straight From Mars’ to ‘Never Again’, r2bees sends listeners on a journey back to the roots of  their musical discovery, different emotions of love and hustle. Though Site 15 is top-notch quality, you experience same flavors from r2bees and you might find some musical clichés that can be ignored. All the same, it has dope chill-mellow joints, as well as vibrant melodies that can get you head nodding or move the dullest heels. In a nutshell, Site 15 is a great comeback for r2bees and a testament that their musical career is far from over … they simply refuse to be broke.
