UDS on a Winning Streak at 8th Mini GUSA Games
The 8th edition of the Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) mini games kicked off in Cape Coast in the Central Region on Thursday 3rd January, 2019. The event which is being hosted by the University of Cape Coast (UCC), has all public universities in Ghana, with the exception of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) competing for laurels in various disciplines, including soccer. The theme for this edition is ‘University Sports as A Catalyst for Sports Development in Ghana.’
In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor of UCC, Prof. Joseph Ghartey noted that sports had being an integral part of our modern educational system, and that the unique and enormous role sports played in the lives of individuals could not be underestimated. He admonished students from the various universities to refrain from the acts of violence that had occurred on some campuses in recent times.
The host institution (UCC) were beaten 1-0 by the University for Development Studies (UDS) in women soccer, played at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium. Mukarama Abdulai, the Black Maidens’ top striker and winner of the Golden Boot at the recently concluded Under 17 Female World Cup competition held in Uruguay scored the only goal of the match. UDS also sent a strong signal of their preparedness to consolidate their dominance in soccer among higher education institutions in the West Africa Sub-Region when they whipped the premier university- University of Ghana 4-3 in men’s soccer.
It would be recalled that UDS made Ghana proud, in the All Africa University Games held in Ethiopia in July 2018, placing 4th ahead of the University of Ghana and 41 other Universities in Africa, and went on to emerge soccer champions at the West Africa University games held in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in November 2018.
